About Palestine, IL - Happy to be your hometown Heating & Air Conditioning Contractor!
Belonging to the state of Illinois, the town of Palestine is based in Crawford County. The area was first discovered by Jean Lamotte, a French explorer who named the land as Palestine. The name was based on the region of Palestine in western Asia that holds religious significance. The town was chartered in 1811 and was the oldest in Illinois, but the area still belonged to Virginia. In 1818, it was declared the seat of Crawford County, but the elections in 1843 named a new town as the county seat. The town was finally incorporated as that of Illinois in 1855. The town is home to a population of 1,369 people and is positioned on a total area of 0.79 square miles, all land.
The little town has a lot to offer in terms of historic sites that visitors would enjoy viewing. Built in the early 1800s for the purpose of protection from Indian attacks, Fort Lamotte can still be viewed as a reminder of the battle that was fought in Illinois. This was one of the few battles that were fought in Illinois as a part of the war in 1812. The fort was used in 1817 and is now being recreated and maintained.
Another place to add to the list is the Fife Opera House, which has been in operation since 1901. Visitors can see the artwork that is used to line the interior of the large theatre. Visitors can see the beautiful hand-painted fire curtain that features artwork created by talented artists that are from Sosman and Landes. The artwork on the fire curtain and the panels surrounding the theatre depict natural and historic scenes which are a beautiful addition the interior. Other than this, the dining experience of the town contributes to an amazing trip to Palestine.
